Masses of the marine insect Pontomyia oceana at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

Pontomyia, an exclusively marine genus of flightless chironomid insect, are rarely observed on the ocean surface. Pontomyia oceana were observed in masses as extensive (~100 m wide) orange patches on the water surface in the lagoon surrounding Turquoise Bay, Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia in 2016-03-10.

海摇蚊属（Pontomyia）是一类专性海洋栖息的无翅摇蚊类群，极少在海洋表面被观测到。2016年3月10日，在澳大利亚西部宁格鲁礁（Ningaloo Reef）绿松石湾（Turquoise Bay）周边的潟湖水面上，人们观测到大量大洋海摇蚊（Pontomyia oceana）聚集形成了宽约100米的橙色斑块。
