RESEARCH BACKGROUND: Carey's research project 'wall work[ing] 7' is the creation of a durational-based intervention into the Front Gallery at Kings ARI. During the installation period, and using the gallery as material itself, this intervention began with the sanding of all walls within the Front Gallery to subtract the top layer of paint. Subsequently, using pencil, a drawing was created across the walls of the Front Gallery. The paint dust subtracted, with the wall drawing, formed the work for this exhibition. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: Through a slow material/immaterial engagement, Carey investigates deeper explorations of durational methods, processes and outcomes, which have the potential for slower and extended experiences for audiences. It foregrounds duration, an attentiveness of being in time. It considers time as method, time as content and time as material. The project extends Carey's research practice, which contributes new understandings of material engagement with site, and ways of reconstructing, observing, occupying and honouring interiors, especially sites in transition. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: The significance of the project is evidenced by its inclusion in KINGS ARI's exhibition program. The programming committee meets bi-annually to assess exhibition proposals. The gallery is well-known for supporting local contemporary art practices and distinctive experimental projects. Carey's work was the subject of artist and writer Abby Kotlarczyk's critical piece 'Layers of contingency, or, the dusting of modern timepieces' for the 2015 KINGS ARI Emerging Writers' Program, presented as catalogue material distributed within the gallery for the respective exhibition as well as being available for download.
