Karonga historical flood occurrences and impacts dataset (2000-2018)

Secondary data on historical flood events, their location, date and recorded impacts in Karonga district of Northern Malawi. As Karonga district is mainly affected by flash flooding, the dataset is specifically driven toward flash flood type risk analysis. The entries were extracted manually from five different sources of information: Disaster reports from Humanitarian Actors (IFRC GO, UNICEF Malawi), existing global disaster (EM-DAT; Munich RE), government data (Malawi Department of Disaster Management Affair - DODMA), online news-briefs (FloodList; ReliefWeb) and national online media (Nyasa Times; The Nation). The resulting consolidated event database has a three levels of spatial granularity: Karonga District, Traditional Authority (TA) and community levels (GVH). A total of 142 records of flash flood events affecting the district from 2000 to 2018 are gathered. This included 48 events reported at district level, and 38 events at TA level.
