Comparative genomic analysis of environmental and clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolates from Bugando Medical Centre, Mwanza, Tanzania

This study presents whole-genome sequencing data for two Staphylococcus aureus isolates collected in 2020 from the orthopedics ward at Bugando Medical Centre, Mwanza, Tanzania. One isolate was recovered from a high-touch environmental surface (a wheelchair handle), and the other from a rectal swab collected from a hospitalized patient within 24 hours of admission. The data were generated to compare genomic lineage, antimicrobial resistance determinants, virulence factors, and mobile genetic elements between environmental and clinical S. aureus isolates recovered from the same hospital setting. These sequences support investigations into hospital-associated transmission, environmental persistence, and genomic surveillance for infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship in low-resource healthcare settings.
