Searching for AGN buried in starbursts

We propose XMMNewton observations of 6 nearby molecularrich infraredgalaxies to complete the program of an AGN search, of which 5 targetsfrom the orignally proposed 11 galaxies have been approved inAO1. Results from the AO1 observations support the hypothesis that asignificant fraction of these galaxies harbour obscured AGN whilestarburst phenomena are prominent in the optical and infraredbands. This sample represents a population of obscured AGN which aremissed by AGN surveys in other wave bands.
