During the 1997-1998 Rift Valley Fever (RVF) outbreak in Kenya, a virus isolate was obtained from a bovine calf presenting with febrile disease. It tested negative for RVF virus and other arboviruses, that were tested for at the time. The goal of this project was to identify the unknown virus isolate, using a metagenomics approach. We successfully identified the virus as Ndumu virus (NDUV), a member of the Togaviridae family; Alphavirus genus and to obtain a near complete genome sequence of the virus isolate.
