Plankton forms the foundation of material cycling and energy flow in marine food webs. Their species composition and community structure are critical for understanding temporal changes in the marine ecosystem of a specific sea area. Zooplankton constitute a vital component of marine life. Occupying a central trophic position within the marine food web, they control the biomass of phytoplankton at lower trophic levels and exert top-down regulatory effects on the population sizes of higher trophic-level organisms such as fish, birds, and marine mammals. Therefore, research on zooplankton is a key focus in marine biodiversity and marine resource assessment studies. Moreover, zooplankton serve as ideal indicator species for investigating the impacts and feedbacks of global change on marine ecosystems. Conducting surveys of marine zooplankton in the Southern Ocean holds critical significance for elucidating the changing trends of biodiversity, their responses and feedbacks to environmental variations, and assessing the potential impacts on the utilization of marine biological resources. During the 37th Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition, surveys of marine picoplankton were carried out. The abundance data of picoplankton collected during this expedition were measured using a BD FACSCalibur flow cytometer.
