From Yinyang Philosophy to the Third Space: A Video Rendering of Cultural Orbiting

This conceptual video rendering was developed through my PhD research into intercultural understanding in visual arts education. It visualises the movement of my thinking from yinyang philosophy toward the opening of the Third Space as a generative field for cultural orbiting. Drawing on Chinese philosophical thinking, the video works with the idea that one gives rise to two, two gives rise to three, and three opens possibilities. In this study, the Third Space is understood not as a fixed location, but as an in-between, relational, and generative space where intercultural understanding may begin to unfold through lived curriculum and pedagogical movement (Aoki, 2005; Bhabha, 1994; Wang, 2012). The video draws visual inspiration from the documentary Everything and Nothing, particularly its cosmological imagery of void, emergence, relation, and transformation. The visual sequence was developed with AI-assisted video generation using Seedance, and was conceptually directed, selected, edited, and framed by the author. Rather than functioning as an illustration alone, this video acts as a non-traditional research output and visual research communication. It gives visual form to the philosophical and methodological opening of my yinyang-informed a/r/tographic inquiry and to my emerging concept of cultural orbiting. Reference Aoki, T. T. (2005).
