Crazy Bird Shelter is located at an elevation of approximately 8400 ft. Other studies in this
region at lower elevations have yielded evidence of maize. Macrofloral analysis at Crazy Bird
Shelter did not provide any evidence of maize. P-II and early P-III olla fragments recovered at
elevations above 10,000 ft. might have been used for long distance transport of foods including
maize. The primary question at Crazy Bird Shelter is whether or not the occupants had access to
and used maize. In addition, pollen analysis provides information concerning local vegetation at
the time of the various occupations ranging from below the Middle Archaic until Formative.
