Whole genome sequencing of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales from patients and hospital sewage. Enterobacterales

Sewage contains excreted bacteria from a large number of individuals. Thus, analyses of sewage could serve as a surveillance system for antibiotic resistance, which should not least be suitable for the detection of rare forms of resistance. With the aim to evaluate the value of sewage analyses for the surveillance of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE), we have compared CPE isolated from sewage and patients at a large Swedish hospital.
