In this study, we have developed an innovative method for tracking the source of environmental DNA (eDNA) using qPCR assays. Specifically, we focused on targeting the mitochondrial DNA of chickens. To validate our method, we collected and analyzed fecal samples from various sources. Subsequently, we applied this method to assess the extent of chicken fecal contamination on the Virginia Eastern Shore, an area known for its extensive poultry operations.
