First Tree D.B.H (cm)- D.B.H (Diameter at breast height) was
approximately 130cm from the ground, which
was the observer’s breast height, and was measured in centimeters. The diameter
of the tree
trunk was measured at this height with the use of transect tape. It was horizontally
allied along the trunk (diameter)
of the tree and the value was recorded. The D.B.H was measured in regards to the larger tree; the tree
that was visually observed as large contained a wider trunk, was bigger and taller).
Conditions: A number between 0-2 was given to
each tree that was observed according to its physical
appearance and/or condition. 0= Tree is
dead, no leaves/brown dead leaves, peeling bark.
1= The tree is living with few leaves, not a very abundant canopy. 3= Tree has
a large green canopy, with
healthy leaves and bark. This was determined according to the
observer’s discretion on each tree.
Distance between
first and second tree (cm):The distance
between the first observed tree and the second observed tree was measured in centimeters by transect tape. The distance
was measured from each trees’ trunk. These trees were not a selective type, the
distance was measured between
trees with close locality.
Hypothesis It is
hypothesized that the larger the
diameter of the tree and the greater the distance between the first and the second tree, the
tree will be in a better condition due to the fact that it has less surrounding completion and has its own
personal space. With this, the tree can utilize the resources around it for itself only.
Prediction 1: The greater the D.B.H of the first tree,
the further the second tree is.
Prediction 2: The
further the second tree is, the better conditions of the first tree.
Site Description: Danby
woodlot, York University Campus. Data was collected at the time period of
14:30-17:30, at the temperature of 28°C, sunny, hot, humid
weather. Abundant vegetation of leaves, flowers, grass, weeds and other plants.
