Seabird and marine mammal observations from the RV Investigator voyage IN2023_V02, southwest of Tasmania, Australia (2023)

In early 2023, a seismic survey was conducted by the CSIRO Marine National Facilities research vessel RV Investigator. The voyage IN2023_V02 traversed 4193 nautical miles in waters near to the west and southwest coast of Tasmania, Australia. As per protocols and permits, two Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) Benjamin Viola and Peter Puskic were onboard to mitigate the impacts of the seismic system on marine mammals. They took the opportunity to conduct a seabird survey, recording over 1900 observations of 38 bird species along with 7 marine mammal species.
