Bacterial microbiome of Psyllids Associated with Rutaceae in Bhutan

Given the importance of endophytic bacteria to crop protection and to the biology of psyllids, this study has characterised the microbiomes of five different psyllids associated with Rutaceae in Bhutan: Diaphorina citri, Diaphorina communis, Cornopsylla rotundicornis, Cacopsylla heterogena an unidentified Cacopsylla sp. The 16S rDNA gene was amplified and sequenced and showed that all five psyllid species contained OTUs related to Wolbachia, the P-endosymbiont 'Ca. Carsonella ruddii', and S-endosymbionts that group with bacteria associated with closely related psyllids. Plant pathogenic liberibacters that are vectored by these psyllids were also detected in some individuals.
