资源简介:
Background: The purpose of this study was to examine COVID-19 testing barriers, less invasive testing methods, and community engagement approaches among underserved minority populations in Miami-Dade County. Non-Hispanic Black and Latino communities in this region experienced disproportionately high hospitalization and death rates due to longstanding structural inequities and social determinants of health. The study focused on understanding barriers to testing and future vaccine uptake, evaluating community engagement to increase testing, assessing acceptability and performance of alternative sample collection methods, and identifying strategies to support community involvement in COVID-19 testing and vaccination efforts.
Materials/Methods: Community-engaged research was conducted in collaboration with Borinquen Health Care Center and other community-based partners. Activities included evaluating barriers to testing and future vaccine uptake. Community outreach and deployment of a mobile testing unit were assessed for acceptability and reach in underserved neighborhoods. Sample collection methods were compared by examining the acceptability, sensitivity, and specificity of medically administered nasopharyngeal swabs versus saliva.
Outcome/Impact: The study findings supported more effective and accessible testing strategies, strengthened community-engaged approaches to increase testing, and informed culturally appropriate outreach to improve acceptance of future vaccines. Results positioned community partners to enhance mitigation efforts and support public health responses in populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19.
