Representation of Syrian and Ukrainian Refugees in the Media A Critical Analysis of the Discourse of the News

Internal conflicts and wars in Syria and Ukraine have led to huge amount of migration. Türkiye is one of the countries, which has been mostly migrated to. This study investigates (a) the way Syrian and Ukrainian asylum-seekers are represented in differently positioned newspapers in terms of ideology and (b) whether there is a difference between the discourses of the news depending on the country. The sample of this study is comprised of Sabah, Hürriyet and Sözcü newspapers. News about Syrian and Ukrainian refugees which took place between 1st March-1st May 2022 in the websites of the newspapers constitute the data of the studyThe data were comparatively analyzed in terms of representation, ideology, other and discourse after being coded with the help of Maxquda package program. As a result, in the analysis conducted in five different categories, it was found that all three newspapers covered the events related to Ukrainian and Syrian asylum-seekers with different discourses and perspectives. And it was also specified that there are differences in terms of the meanings constructed by the media’s discourses of the news and the representations of the refugee groups, which is the subject of this study.
