Soil moisture is an important variable to influence land-atmosphere interactions by modifying energy and water fluxes in the boundary layer. It is one of the most important variables long-term monitored by Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN). The soil moisture in-situ monitoring instruments have been set up in 34 sites of terrestrial ecosystems according to the CERN’s protocols of observation and quality assurance. The dataset released is about the collections of soil moisture observed in weather station from 34 sites across China, during 2005 to 2014. The raw data have been processed through basic quality control approaches and general format translation. Changes and differences of monitoring instruments are also recorded. This time-series dataset can provide a general profile, spatial and temporal dynamics of soil moisture over China since 2005. It also can be used for validating of remote sensing retrieval, calibrating and validating models.
