The lack of evidence for extensive polyploidy in homosporous ferns with high chromosome numbers has been referred to as the "polyploidy paradox". By analyzing the first fully assembled genome of a homosporous fern, we can acknowledge how fern genomes experience rapid evolution at the genic and segmental levels following polyploidy while maintaining genome size and chromosome number stability.
