Transcripts of Semi-Structured Interviews with 30 Community Pharmacists on Promoting Medication Adherence in Clients with Diabetes and Hypertension: A COM-B Framework Qualitative Study

Background: Community pharmacists play a crucial role in improving medication adherence, particularly for chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. In Ghana, the rising prevalence of these conditions, coupled with low adherence rates, leads to poorer health outcomes. Despite their potential, the role of community pharmacists in promoting medication adherence remains underrecognized. This study examines how pharmacists' capabilities, opportunities, and motivations influence their behaviour in improving medication adherence.
Methods: This study utilized the COM-B framework, which posits that capability, opportunity, and motivation are essential for behavioural change. The study investigated how these three factors influenced the behaviour of 30 community pharmacists in the Greater Accra region of Ghana to improve medication adherence among clients with diabetes and hypertension. Between May and July 2023, semi-structured interviews were conducted. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analysed thematically to identify key factors influencing pharmacists’ practices.
