Desulfurobacterium sp. strain AV08 was isolated from Bag City, a low temperature diffuse flow vent at Axial Seamount located on the Juan de Fuca Ridge. Members of the Desulfurobacterium genus have been identified globally in deep-sea vents. The project goals were to address key knowledge gaps in understanding the hydrothermal vent microbial food web, including the viral shunt. Genome sequencing and annotation identified possible physiological characteristics, such as low oxygen tolerance that were subsequently determined experimentally.
