CLIVAR Repeat Hydrography (2003-2014): Global Surface dissolved Al data and Al-derived dust deposition estimates

GENERAL DESCRIPTION This dataset compiles dissolved aluminum (dAl) measurements and associated hydrographic parameters collected by the Measures Group (SOEST, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa) as part of the trace-metal program on CLIVAR Repeat Hydrography cruises conducted between 2003 and 2014. The dataset contains 628 valid surface observations spanning the global ocean and accompanies a manuscript currently under review in Global Biogeochemical Cycles. CONTENTS 1. Surface dissolved aluminum and hydrography For each station, the dataset provides the first (shallowest) sampling depth, including: Dissolved Al concentration (dAl [nmol/L]) Geographic position (latitude, longitude) Sampling depth [m] Date and Time (UTC) Hydrographic parameters: salinity, temperature Macronutrients: nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and silicic acid (all in µmol/kg) 2. Annual Argo Mixed Layer Depth (MLD) The annual MLD climatology for each station was retrieved from the UCSD Mixed Layer Depth Climatology database (mixedlayer.ucsd.edu; accessed June 2025). MLD was computed using the Boyer–Montegut density-threshold criterion (Δσθ = 0.03 kg m⁻³). Parameter name: Mean_Annual_Argo_MLD [m] 3. Mean annual mixed-layer dissolved Al For each station, the mean dissolved Al concentration within the annual Argo MLD was calculated: Parameter name: Mean_dAl_in_Argo_annual_MLD [nmol/L] If the Argo annual MLD was shallower than the first CLIVAR sampling depth, the single shallowest dAl value was used. 4. Atmospheric dust deposition estimates Two types of dust deposition fluxes are included: Mahowald_Dust [g m⁻² yr⁻¹]: model-based atmospheric dust deposition extracted from Mahowald et al. (2005). MADCOW_Dust [g m⁻² yr⁻¹]: aluminum-derived dust deposition fluxes calculated using the MADCOW approach. 5. Quality Flags (QF) Each parameter is accompanied by a quality flag: QF = 0 — Good QF = 1 — Unknown QF = 4 — Questionable QF = 8 — Bad Contact For questions about the dataset, please contact:Maxime Grand (M.
