Integral approach to the evaluation of poultry manure, compost and digestate

The global egg market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.7% in 2021. This increase in egg production resulting in an increase in the generation of waste (poultry manure) in peri-urban areas. In this sense, it is necessary to investigate poultry manure stabilization processes, as well as to evaluate the generated products, such as compost and digestate. This study analyzed the physicochemical, toxicity, microbiological and metagenomic properties of raw and treated poultry manure (compost and digestate). Compost and digestate presented better general conditions to be released into the environment as an organic amendment than poultry manure. Amendments derived from the poultry manure treatments allowed to reduce the risks of contamination and to be used in agricultural systems in a more sustainable way.
