Dataset from Collaborative Community Networks to Optimize Implementation of Low Barrier COVID-19 Testing Efforts Among Diverse Latinx Populations in Northern California

Background: This study evaluated community-engaged approaches to improve access and uptake of COVID-19 testing among majority Latinx communities in Northern California. The study also sought to understand local epidemiology and the factors driving stark ethnic disparities in COVID-19 case rates.

Materials/Methods: In Aim 1, the study evaluated implementation of a Latino Task Force (LTF) collaborative network across Marin, Merced, and San Francisco counties to promote locally adapted COVID-19 test-and-respond initiatives. In Aim 2, the study determined the population-level prevalence of active SARS-CoV-2 infection, identified the most at-risk subgroups, and assessed attitudes and preferences regarding COVID-19 testing during baseline mass testing campaigns. The campaigns offered PCR testing to all residents regardless of symptoms, at accessible venues, and were implemented in partnership with each site’s LTF.

Outcome/Impact: The intended outcome of this study was to increase access to and uptake of COVID-19 testing in majority Latinx communities, reduce disparities in case detection, and inform community-responsive strategies for ongoing public health needs.
