The gut microbiota profoundly influences host physiology, yet how host genetics shape microbial function remains poorly understood. Using Aida-/- mice that are obese due to enhanced fat absorption, we show that AIDA deficiency enriches two Clostridia strains (XMU-68 and XMU-209). Paradoxically, monocolonizing wild-type mice with either strain ameliorates diet-induced obesity. Thus, strain expansion constitutes a compensatory adaptation that establishes a host-microbiota axis regulating systemic energy homeostasis.
