Siderite (ferrous iron carbonate, FeCO3), a key redox-sensitive carbonate mineral that was common in early Earth surface environments, is preserved in the Paleocene Fort Union Formation in the Wind River Basin in concretions, pedogenic carbonate, and sandstone/mudstone cements. In this paper, we interpret the depositional and geochemical controls for siderite collected from seven drill cores and two outcrop sections. The data in this repository include: 1) thin section images showing siderite fabrics; 2) Siderite stable carbon and oxygen isotope compositions measured by a continuous flow Delta V IRMS coupled to a Gasbench II at Penn State and a MAT253 IRMS with a continuous flow system coupled to a GasBench II at Johns Hopkins University; 3) X-ray diffraction conducted in the Materials Characterization Lab (MCL) at Penn State; 4) electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) performed in the Materials Characterization Lab (MCL) at Penn State. The findings and conclusions of this data set will be presented in a manuscript submitted to the Journal of Sedimentary Research.
