This project investigates the distribution characteristics and patterns of plant diversity in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve.
1. It has clarified the community quantity, structural layers, dynamic succession of tropical forests within the reserve, as well as the distribution of rare and endangered plants, representing the most comprehensive scientific elaboration of plant diversity in the reserve to date.
2. Adopting the principles and methods of Wu Zhengyi's phytogeography, it conducted a comprehensive and systematic study on the flora of the reserve. A master database containing 2520 plant geographic elements was established via computer database programs, which was divided into 12 sub-databases. Statistical analyses of the flora were carried out within each sub-database.
3. It proposed that the Banna evergreen forest belongs to seasonal rainforest rather than montane rainforest, which is of great significance for studying the distribution patterns of tropical forests in southern China.
4. Using the biogeographic regionalization system, it proposed that the reserve belongs to the Thai seasonal forest unit, with a large number of co-occurring tropical species among Yunnan, Myanmar and Thailand, but few regional endemic species.
This research has prominent significance in plant ecology and phytogeography, and serves as a scientific basis for the conservation of plant landscape and flora diversity, ecological construction and sustainable development in the Indochina Peninsula region of southern China.
This project has already exerted and will continue to exert positive social and ecological benefits. For example, it has played an important role in attracting support for the reserve's construction from international organizations including the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and International Conservation (IC).
