Fisheries and Oceans Canada partnered with CanSeq150 and the International Centre for Sturgeon Studies at Vancouver Island University (VIU) to assemble a genome for white sturgeon thought to be from the Fraser River basin population (broodstock sourced from VIU). To reduce the complexity of the assembly, a treatment of male gametes with UV, heat, and/ or pressure was conducted on gametes before and during fertilization of eggs in an attempt to produce doubled-haploid white sturgeon juveniles, thus reducing the total number of different haplotypes circulating in the offspring to be sequenced.
