Mold Economy, Tooling Networks, and Informal Manufacturing in Jiepai, Southern Jiangsu, China

The record explains how small and medium sized factories use molds to produce aftermarket auto parts, vehicle lighting components, bumpers, and related exterior parts. It focuses not on mold making technology itself, but on the economic, social, and organizational systems through which molds are financed, shared, protected, reused, and contested. A central contribution of the record is its description of local mechanisms such as “He Mu” (合模, joint mold investment) and “Bing Mu” (并模, incorporation into or paid use of an existing mold). These mechanisms show how mold development costs, production risks, product rights, use rights, and market expectations are distributed among factories, business owners, and manufacturing partners. The record also describes how production may be organized through in house injection molding, outsourced injection processing points, informal access to existing molds, and negotiated production rights.
