Fluoroquinolone resistance (FQR) in multi-drug resistant invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella Typhimurium is becoming a global health threat. ST313 S. Typhimurium strains found in sub-Saharan Africa are acquiring such resistance at a rapid rate. To identify how FQR develops and affects the bacteria, we will perform whole genome sequencing on bacteria that have been exposed to fluoroquinolones for varying periods of time. This analysis will help determine whether bacteria can develop genetic resistance to fluoroquinolones within 24 hours or there are additional factors involved in survival of fluoroquinolone treatment. This work is being done in parallel with transcriptomics, which will help elucidate the contribution of genetic and epigenetic factors in drug resistance.
