Whole genome sequencing was performed in order to characterize a highly pathogenic, multi antibiotic-resistant strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae carrying the Oxa-48 beta-lactamase. This strain caused an outbreak in a Dutch hospital in 2011 that sickened 78 patients, killing 27. Comparative genomics was used to identify strain-specific signature sequences for detection and tracking of this organism.
