Thousands of such terracotta masks were found in the Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia. Most of them were originally painted. Different types of faces are represented: satyrs, gorgons, ugly and wrinkled faces ('warriors') and caricatures. Such masks have a long tradition in the Near East and are a striking example of foreign influence at Sparta. The masks may have been used in the cult of Artemis, for example in ritual dancing or drama; they could be held or attached to the head with strings, as some masks are perforated around the edge. This object is part of Scan The World. Scan the World is a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory, through which we are creating a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks and landmarks from across the globe for the public to access for free.
