Unimodal vs. cross-modal comparisons of social preferences

Based on the delayed compensation method, this study compare social preferences between more laboratory-like uni-modal and more real-world cross-modal. The results revealed that prosocial tendencies were lower in uni-modal than in cross-modal. Moreover, social value orientation scores, as measured by traditional tools, were correlated with compensations in uni-modal but not in cross-modal. These findings suggest that existing tools for measuring social preferences may lack ecological validity, offering insights and guidance for future researchers in selecting and developing appropriate measurement tools.
