Migration Experiences, Transnational Ties, and Aspirations among Adolescent Students in the State of Mexico

OverviewThis dataset contains survey data collected from 529 adolescent students (male and female) enrolled in 14 secondary schools across five municipalities in the southern region of the State of Mexico. The data were collected between September and November 2024. The selected municipalities—Tonatico, Ixtapan de la Sal, Villa Guerrero, Zumpahuacán, and Coatepec Harinas—are characterized by important levels of migration activity, particularly in relationto migration to the United States. The dataset provides information on key dimensions of migration-related dynamics among youth, including direct migration experiences, transnational family ties, household participation in international remittances, migration aspirations, and levels of exposure to international migration. Dataset ContentThe dataset includes variables related to:- Direct migration experience (e.g., having been in the United States or being born there)- Transnational family ties (parents and extended family members with migration experience)- Household participation in international remittances- Migration aspirations (intention to migrate to the United States for study or work)- A composite migration exposure index based on personal and family migration experiences Ethical ConsiderationsThe data collection process followed ethical guidelines for research involving human participants, particularly minors. Participation was voluntary, and informed consent procedures were observed in accordance with ethical standards for social research. All data have been fully anonymized to protect participants’ identities. No personally identifiable information is included in the dataset. Municipality names have been anonymized to prevent indirect identification of participants.
