Astrephomene is a volvocine alga (Chlorophyta) which has evolved multicellular traits such as 3D body plan (spheroidal colony), germ-soma differentiation and expanded extracellular matrix independently of volvocacean species. In order to reveal the molecular bases underlying the parallel evolution of these multicellular traits in the volvocine lineage, whole genome sequences from Astrephomene gubernaculifera were constructed.
