The data set includes natural landscapes that are demarcated according to the spread of soils. The basis for this was the overview map of the soils of Saxony-Anhalt 1:200.000. The structure of the soil landscapes follows the cross-border coordinations in Germany, which are carried out in the “Fundkundliche Kartierweisung” (5th edition). Ed. 2005) is executed.
The soil landscapes are hierarchically structured. The structure makes it possible to filter and map different factors complexes of soil development as well as their application in different scales:
1. Soil regions are supraregional areas of equal or similar geological development. They are demarcated after the distribution of quaternary sediments lying on the surface (first point in the number code of soil landscapes).
2. Large soil landscapes are landscape areas with a similar structure of the layer profile in which the soil horizons have formed (second place in the number code of soil landscapes). The large-scale soil landscapes are distinguished according to the nature of the upcoming looser or solid rocks and subdivide the soil regions.
3. Soil landscape groups in some large soil landscapes characterise the distribution area of typical, large-area soil forms (third place in the four-digit number code of soil landscapes).
4. Soil landscapes are local landscape units in which the totality of soil-forming factors acts in the same or similar way (last digit in the number code of soil landscapes). They are further divided into partial landscapes.
The soil regions and large landscapes are coordinated for the Federal Republic of Germany in the Soilkundliche Kartierweisung (2005). According to them, the soil overview maps are in scale 1: 200000 of the Federal Republic of Germany. This structure identifies landscape spaces with similar natural characteristics and subject to the same or similar conditions of protection and use.
