VPRS 15023 Advances Cards

This series consists of cards summarising advances made to farmers to enable them to continue with farming operations. Advances were mainly available under the Closer Settlement and Discharged Soldiers Settlement Acts. They were also available under the Seed Advances Act, the Cultivation Advances Acts (1933 and 1934) and the Farmers Advances Act 1935 which provided advances for other farmers. These Acts were administered by the Closer Settlement Board and later the Closer Settlement Commission and by the Farmers Advances Branch. This latter Branch was part of the Occupation branch of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey for almost 20 years.Under these Acts and provisions in other related Acts, farmers were able to obtain advances in terms of stock and/or equipment or credit to obtain the same in order to continue their farming operations. Mortgages or liens on produce were taken as security for the repayment of the principal and the statutory rate of interest.Details given on each card are the name of the the farmer, the location of the land and its size and the file number. Also given is the nature of the title held for the land - Crown grant or lease or Closer or Discharged Soldier Settlement lease as all could be mortgaged as security for advances. Other details are the date when entries relating to the granting of advances were made, the form of security (whether a title or a lien on produce), the amount of the security, the date submitted to the Board of Land and Works and details of the Office of Titles registration of mortgages. Other details may relate to the redemption of securities.
