We hypothesize that discrete soil physiochemical properties shape the microbial phenotypes and are thus the primary cause of the progressions of distinct denitrifiers with distinguishable denitrification processes in different soil types. To further unravel the underlying soil phenomenon leading to the evolution of distinct microbial communities and ultimate differences in N2O accumulation in black soil (BS) and fluvo-aquic soil (FS), we intend to conduct comparative cross-inoculation experiments between these two soils.
