The avocado (Persea americana Mill., Lauraceae) is a member of the commercially important plant family, Lauraceae. Avocado is a large tropical fruit tree originated in South Central Mexico, has the highest oil content of all fruit. Avocado has eight geographical ecotypes, including three horticulture races: Mexican (P. Americana var. drymifolia), the West Indian (P. americana var. americana) and the Guatemala (P. nubigena var. nubigena and P. nubigena var. guatemalensis), current commercial varieties are hybrids of these three races. Avocado is also one of the ancient fruit trees associated with human history in the world., recent archaeological research found evidence that the avocado was present in Peru as long as 8,000 to 15,000 years ago. Avocados are commercially valuable and are cultivated in tropical、subtropical and Mediterranean climates throughout the world. Avocado fruit is green-skinned, fleshy body that may be pear-shaped, egg-shaped, or spherical, generally, ripen after harvesting. Avocado mesocarp (flesh) contains up to 30% oil which is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, these fatty acid has been found to have beneficial effects on reduce cardiovascular disease risk. Avocado also contain several bioactive phytochemicals including carotenoids, vitamins B, vitamins C, and E, D-mannoheptulose etc., these constituents have demonstrated antifungal, antitumor and antioxidant activities. Avocado also has been found to have in vitro growth inhibitory effects against cancer. Avocado is well known for its beneficial skin properties. Hass variety belongs to the Guatemalan-Mexican hybrid group, is the major avocado variety grow in most commercial production countries. Hass variety was currently subject to the whole genome sequence to learn information about the underlying basis for the observed differences within the genus. This project assembles the first whole genome for avocado by using the PacBio long reads.
