Protist communities were investigated across three water masses (Subtropical Water, the Southland Front and sub-Antarctic Surface Water) off the southeast coast of South New Zealand. The water masses were sampled in austral summer January 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. The sampling day in January 2018 coincided with the extreme marine heatwave of 2017/18. Syndiniales was found to dominate Subtropical and sub-Antarctic Surface Waters during the marine heatwave.
