The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) faecal microbiome differs with diet in a wild population.

This study investigated the gut microbiome of a large cohort of wild (in-situ) koalas (n=32), a vulnerable species that is also a dietary specialist. Significance: We analysed and report diet data, which links diet to individual koala gut microbiomes (reported for the first time). Previous koala gut microbiome studies incorporated three koalas (two wild, one sick and one hit by vehicle, and one captive koala) and did not link the gut microbiome to diet eaten.
