Woodlot Meta-Data Description of Data Column Labels:Tree: A sample of 20 trees in the woodlot.Distance from Tree to Next (m): The distance, in metres, measured from one tree to the next.Diameter at Breast Height (cm): The diameter at breast height (dbh), in centimetres, of the tree trunk.Condition: The condition for each tree was placed into three categories based on condition- dead (0), living (1), huge green canopy (2).The data obtained in this experiment is both continuous and categorical, as the data was recorded numerically for distance (m) and diameter (cm), and recorded in categories (dead, living, huge green canopy) for the condition. The data for distance was recorded in metres (m) and the diameter in centimetres (cm). The condition for each tree was recorded as dead (0), living (1), huge green canopy (2).The field site was located on the York University-Keele Campus in a woodlot area near Keele Street and York Boulevard. The conditions were sunny, clear skies, and 24 degrees Celsius. The woodlot was approximately 350m by 500m wide. Methods: Two measuring tapes were used to transect the woodlot. The longer measuring tape was used as the distance from the edge of the woodlot to the centre was travelled. 20 adult trees of the same species and who were over 5 feet that were encountered from the edge to the centre of the woodlot were randomly selected and measured. For each tree, the distance from each tree to the next was measured and recorded in metres (m). Using the smaller measuring tape, the diameter at breast height was measured and recorded in centimetres (cm) for each tree. Furthermore, the condition of each tree was recorded as dead (0), living (1), or huge green canopy (2).This survey was conducted at approximately 4 p.m. and took 30 minutes to complete.Hypothesis: Regions of the woodlot less densely populated with trees will have trees with a larger diameter at breast height.Prediction: If the regions of the woodlot less densely populated with trees have a larger diameter at breast height, the growth rate of the trees is dependent upon the presence of other tree species within the area, as they won't have to compete for nutrients or sunlight.
