The excavated waste rocks from during tunnel-drilling projects naturally contain potentially toxic metals like selenium (Se) and its concentration sometimes exceed the environmental standards. The biological removing dissolved Se (i.e., Se[VI] and Se[IV]) in the waste rock by indigenous microorganisms are largely unknown. Here, chemical analyses and high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes were carried out to clarify whether or not the rock microbial communities responsible for Se(VI) and lactate amendment.
