Harmful algal blooms are increasing worldwide in freshwater and marine ecosystems due to eutrophication of water bodies and changes in water temperature. Typically those bloom-forming organisms consist of a diversity of genotypes which cause the enormous variety of toxins and related bioactive peptides. The genome sequencing and the full assembly of the genome sequences provides the possibility to analyse the genome-specific differences/recombinations as well the role of putative causative agents such as transposable elements. Isolated by Olav Skulberg (Norwegian Institute of Water Research, Oslo) from Lake Langsjön (Finland) in 1984.
