[C4OC] Mulga Graze

The project ‘MULGA graze’ is an investment programme to facilitate the desire outcomes
2013-2018 for CFOC Sustainable Agriculture stream that focuses on “sustainable production
of food” through the investigation of alternative grazing systems to ensure protection and
enhancement of perennial native pasture species.
The MULGA graze project is aligned to the CFOC priority of ‘protecting the resource base’
through the increase of land manager entities that are undertaking practices that:
• Improve the sustainability and productivity of grazing enterprises from perennial
pasture utilisation
• Improve the ecological services of native perennial pastures endemic to the grazing
trial system localities
• Enhance the native perennial pasture resilience to climate change in an area that
experiences wide seasonal fluctuations in environmental conditions
• Increase the number of farming entities that are adopting sustainable land use
practices
• Increase the community awareness and understanding of Australia’s natural resources
The MULGA graze project investment will explore the incorporation of 3 specific and
measurable on ground activities at the 4 trial sites that will focus on three key components,
consisting of:
• Native perennial plant species which provide abundant and quality feed that is
nutritionally matched to livestock’s seasonal requirements
• Improvements of soil health characteristics for carbon enhancement, plant growth and
nutrient capture
