Two fatal cases of septicaemia linked to transmission of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus clonal complex 398 in a hospital and nursing home, Denmark

We describe two fatal cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clonal complex 398 septicaemia in persons with no contact to livestock. Whole genome sequencing of the isolated MRSA strains strongly suggested that both were of animal origin and that the patients had been infected from two independent person-to-person transmission chains.
