Bones from the Evening Meal: Methods of Metabolism and Not-Knowing

This exegesis is concerned with articulating an artistic methodology that explores the concepts of ‘metabolism’ and ‘re-metabolisation’ in art. These modes operate by embracing what is termed a ‘productive absence,’ a state described by not-knowing, confusion, and a reluctance to provide definitive answers. This concept is a key aspect of the research methodology. The research examines various artists' practices that highlight the value of uncertainty, not-knowing, and confusion as generative attributes in both the creation and reception of art. In this context, the practice of art is positioned as being perpetually incomplete.
