This overview briefly expounds the fundamental principles of cryopreservation for plant cells; it introduces the general procedures for cryopreserving plant materials, including material selection, pretreatment, cryogenic freezing, and thawing and recovery culture, with a particular focus on the operational steps of two commonly used cryopreservation methods: controlled-rate freezing and vitrification. Next, it elaborates on the main factors influencing the cryopreservation of Picea species, including genotype, cell age and growth status, cryoprotectants and various pretreatment methods, different cryopreservation methods as well as cooling rates.
