Many willow species, especially the short-rotation coppice willows, are suitable for development into renewable bioenery crops. In recent decades, a rising demand for energy from renewable sources has provided a new impetus to cultivation willows for bioenergy production. But our knowledge for woody plants is limited in comparison with that for many crops. This is mainly due to the lack of genomic information and genetic tools. In this study, we used RNA-Seq technology to characterize the S. suchowensis transcriptome with five different tissues, including tend roots, young leaves, vegetative buds, non-lignified shoots and barks. Based on the transcriptome sequence assemblies, we established a large EST-SSR primer database and identified some DEGs for willow which are useful for different aspects of genetic studies on Salix spp., and particularly valuable for marker-assisted breeding of willows..
