Phlebopus portentosus (Berk. and Broome) Boedijn belongs to the basidiomycete family Boletinellaceae. P. portentosus is distributed in tropical regions such as south China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc. Unlike its closely related and better-known mushrooms in Boletaceae, P. portentosus can be artificially cultivated. Research results so far suggest that this species can fruit both as a saprophyte and an ectomycorrhizal symbiont with plants. It offers an excellent model from which to examine the genetic bases of life style adaptations and changes for mushrooms.
