资源简介:

This dataset is supplemental material to the manuscript "How do cold pools influence the size of tropical cyclone embryos?," which has been submitted to the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences. movie_Fig2.mp4: A movie version of Fig2 that show the horizontal anomaly of midlevel water vapor mixing ratio (first row), near-surface water vapor mixing ratio (second row), and near-surface potential temperature (third row). The first, second, and third column shows the result of Ev=0.2, 1, and 2.5 CM1 simulations, respectively. Fig. S1: Comparison between the longwave radiative heating rate and surface sensible heating rate in cold pool regions, using the Ev=1 experiment at t=2.5 days and showing the 100 km x 100 km southwest corner of the domain. (a) The total radiative heating rate (shortwave plus longwave) vertically averaged from 0 to z=281.6 m (the lowest four model levels), which is roughly the cold pool height (half the mixed layer depth). The nonuniform vertical grid spacing is considered using a trapezoidal integral. The air density is assumed vertically uniform for simplicity. We find but do not show here that the lowest model level contributes a considerable positive longwave heating rate, but the 2-4th vertical levels contribute to negative longwave heating rate. (b) The effective sensible heating rate is calculated by dividing the surface sensible heat flux by z=281.6 m. In cold pool regions (where the surface sensible heating rate is anomalously high), the total radiative heating rate (~0.5 K/day) is much smaller than the effective sensible heating rate (~3 K/day). Fig. S2: The lowest model level (z=25m) - sea surface temperature (300 K) difference ∆θ in the southwest 100 km x 100 km corner of (a) Ev=0.2, (b) Ev=1, and (c) Ev=2.5 CM1 simulations. postprocessing_codes.zip: The postprocessing codes. - The script coldpool_size.m diagnoses the mean cold pool size and stores the result in R_array.mat. It plots the mean cold pool ize (Fig. A1) and the flow field (Figs. 2 and 3). - The script spectrum.m performs the Fourier analysis and stores the result in spectrum_length_scale.mat. It also plots the spectrum as Fig. 4. - The script theory.m reads R_array.mat and spectrum_length_scale.mat and calculates the nonlocal length scale. It plots Figs. 6, 9, 10, 11, 12. - The script Fig8_chain_model_nondim.m is the numerical cloud chain model that plots Fig. 8. - The script coldpool_movie.m plots figures for making a movie version of Fig. 2. - The script avi_test.m make the movie.
